A North Carolina police department is facing intense scrutiny after a disturbing arrest was caught on camera and quickly spread across social media, leaving residents demanding accountability and answers. The controversy centers on a now-viral doorbell camera recording that appears to show a Shelby police officer repeatedly striking a woman during an arrest.
As the footage circulated online, outrage grew rapidly, eventually leading to public demonstrations and a formal internal investigation.Within days, the officer involved was no longer employed by the department.
According to Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser, the department completed an administrative review into the incident and determined that termination was the appropriate outcome. Prior to that decision, the officer had already been placed on suspension while investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Fraser also made it clear that excessive force has no place within the agency. “I want to be clear that the inappropriate use of force is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by me, the Shelby Police Department or the City of Shelby,” he stated.
The woman seen in the footage was identified as 34-year-old Cherrie Moore. Police have said officers encountered her while conducting a criminal investigation involving what they described as a suspicious person in the area.

The footage appears to show Moore being struck multiple times before another officer intervenes. “You can only imagine how I feel to see my niece bodyslammed to the ground at 90 pounds,” he said. His comments resonated with many people online who expressed concern about the amount of force used during the arrest.
Meanwhile, city officials have acknowledged the difficult road ahead. Shelby City Manager Justin Merritt said the community is still processing what happened but emphasized that efforts to rebuild trust must begin immediately.
“While yesterday’s incident is still raw and difficult to understand, today marks the beginning of a path forward to repair the damage that has been done,” Merritt said.
